Hi Writers/Artists,
Welcome to The PVLSE! We are a student-led production team aiming to represent and express the thoughts of our age group through writing and arts. It is a pleasure to have you on board with us on this journey.
To make this journey more enjoyable, we have created the following Style Guide that includes general guidelines and specific requirements for your submission. Please take a few minutes to read through it. The general guidelines are applicable to all sections, and please refer to the specific section that you would like to contribute for more detailed instructions!
Our primary method of communication is through email, and even if you might receive an automatic response, please do not worry as we will be in touch with you in a timely manner. The contact information below will be used for our communications and you may also refer to Section 2.4 for detailed instructions on your submission.

Theme for Issue 9 (Winter 2023): Alien
We encourage you to make personal connections with the theme when developing your unique work that represents your interpretation of the theme.
Questions to Consider:
- How have differences in race, sexuality, culture, etc., caused people to feel alienated? What are the consequences of this alienation, if any?
- Have any texts you’ve encountered incorporated supernatural elements, like aliens, in a meaningful way? How does this addition advance the text?
- Throughout your life, have there been instances where you felt alienated or saw others as an “alien”? What can you learn from this experience?

2.1 Choice of Language
- Excessively harsh, offensive, or abusive language is not allowed.
2.2 Formatting
- Font: Times New Roman
- Size: 10
- Margins: 2.54 vertically, 3.18 horizontally (Microsoft Word default)
- Spacing: Single-spaced
- Paragraph Breaks: By 1-inch indent
- Titles: Bolded, Times New Roman size 11
2.3 Important Dates
- Submission Deadline: January 5th, 2024 by 11 P.M.
- We will reach out to you after this deadline. Please check your email attentively.
2.4 Submission Guidelines
- The Submission Deadline is strictly adhered to.
- Send your submissions to this email address (thepvlsemagazine@outlook.com) and follow this style guide.
- Include your WeChat ID in your submission. Your editor will be the only person having access to your WeChat ID and your privacy is our priority. Personal information is guaranteed to be immediately deleted after the publication cycle.
- Name your submission “First Name Initial_Last Name_Section”
- Please create the following heading in your submission document: Your Name Your School Section You’re Contributing to Your Email Address
- We will be in contact with you for editing after the Submission Deadline.

3.1 Statement of Mission
- Present is dedicated to conveying youth expressions on contemporary issues, societal debates, or any specific phenomena that influence the adolescent status quo. A submission to this section should be factually justifiable, persuadable, and convincible, including personal analysis or comments on the topic.
3.2 Word Length
- Should be between 1/2 and 1 1/2 pages and between 350 and 900 words.

4.1 Statement of Mission
- Vision is dedicated to presenting students’ artwork (digital or print) or photography that outline unique interpretation of a theme in a variety of forms including drawing, painting, and photography.
4.2 Requirements
- All artworks or photographs should be related to the theme (can be found in Section 0) specific to each issue.
- Please include the title of the work.
- Submission in digital format is preferable and should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

5.1 Statement of Mission
- Lifestyle is dedicated to displaying youth lives with a variety of aspects that represent the youth culture: academics, mental wellness, entertainment, music, science and technology, etc. A submission to this section should be closely related to teenage life, connected to a unique topic that adolescents of our age are passionate about, and a pleasure to read.
5.2 Word Length
- Should be between 1 and 1 1/2 pages or between 500 and 800 words.

6.1 Statement of Mission
- Shortcake is dedicated to offering a break of laughter with jokes, mini-stories, and comics that are enjoyable and appropriate. A submission to this section can vary in style but should be easily understandable and appropriate for adolescents.
6.2 Word Length
- Written mini-stories or short clips should not exceed 150 words.
- Comics should not exceed 1 page of 2 columns.
- Videos should not exceed 5 minutes. Song audios should not exceed 4 minutes.
6.3 Requirements
- Serial comic stories are acceptable but must be submitted and published in consecutive issues. (i.e., A story can bepublished in Issues 1, 2, 3, but cannot be published in Issues 1, 2, 4.)
- Serial comic stories may not require more than 3 publications.
- Minimum video resolution is 720p. Save as .mp3 or .mp4 format.

7.1 Statement of Mission
- Expression is dedicated to presenting creative writing pieces to our readers and operates under a theme specific to each issue. Either poetry or prose is welcomed. A submission to this section should be appealing, thematic, and a pleasure to read.
7.2 Word Length
- Prose should be between 2 and 3 pages or between 1200 and 1800 words.
- Poetry should be less than 1 page of 1 column.
7.3 Requirements
- All prose and poetry should be related to the theme (can be found in Section 0) specific to each issue.
- Serial prose stories are not encouraged as developing content may be problematic thematically.
